Architecture A highway is more than a road: it is the pulse of a country’s progress, carrying daily life, trade and the evolution of the nation. Yet repetition and monotony often reduce it to the task of linking economic and industrial centres, and waste its potential to communicate, inspire and express an identity.
Du’a Gateway, SAME Architects’ entry to the Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture competition, sets out to turn these great corridors into “corridors of meaning”: an urban sculpture that becomes a landmark for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and stands for pride, strength and devotion. Conceived as a gateway of faith, it welcomes every traveller and reminds them of the greatness of God and of the nation. Its name comes from Du’a, the direct invocation of the Creator, and the gateway is an intimate, spiritual dialogue with those who pass, inviting them to remember their faith, humility and gratitude. It answers the competition theme, “Inspiration is all around us”, by affirming that faith, like Du’a, transcends time and place and is present in every breath, journey and step.
The chosen form is the circle, for what it stands for.
Eternity: it has no beginning and no end, just like faith, which is constantly renewed.
Inclusion and equality: every point on the circumference is equally essential, with no hierarchy, reflecting the equality of all before God and the unity of the community of believers.
Contemplation: it invites reflection, like a silent prayer that returns to the centre, to the heart of devotion.
Stability: geometric perfection conveys trust and security, just as faith gives balance to the human spirit.
