Architecture Architecture On a strategic site in Funchal, where residential calm meets the closeness of the city centre, SAME Architects designed a building in dialogue with the contemporary city and the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean Terraces is a residential architecture project that responds to the way Funchal is changing, with new geometries, new materials and a strong connection to the Madeira landscape.
The proposal rests on two gestures: stepped terraces and a façade of subtle curves that echo the waves of the sea. The floors step back gradually from the street, opening up its profile and avoiding the massive effect of three aligned storeys. The result is a dynamic, sculptural façade in which white arches frame terraces, light and greenery and enhance the surrounding area.
The project explores geometry, colour and texture in a clean, current language. White, the curve and the play of solid and void dominate, and cascading planting softens the transition between public space and the private terraces.
