Architecture In Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, the Family Foundation is a building designed to support people and families. An institutional architecture project by SAME Architects that makes welcome its central idea.
A great roof-façade rises at both ends and dips at the centre, like a cloak sheltering the building. At the heart of the complex, a monumental portal and an arched pavilion mark the entrance and invite people in.
The façade is a perforated screen with an Islamic geometric pattern, reinterpreting the mashrabiya in a contemporary language.
A reflecting pool and palm trees cool the arrival and extend the building in its reflection. By day, the screen filters the sun, reduces heat and casts lace-like shadows inside. At night, light passes through the perforations and the façade becomes a golden lantern, visible from afar.
